April 22 is Earth Day, and we celebrate each year by volunteering at our town's recycling center as a family. We help anyone who comes in needing assistance unloading their cars, and we talk to our kids about what recycling is and how it helps the planet.
We celebrate Earth Day all year too. We recycle, we grow our own garden, and I make many of our cleaners and bath products. All of these help our earth by saving natural resources and energy. We also get our three kids involved in taking care of the earth. They clean and sort recycling at home; they help plant, weed, and harvest our garden; and my daughter loves to help me create new recipes, like the chocolate lip balm recipe below.
I've made many, many bath and body recipes for my family that we use daily, but I do prefer commercial toothpaste and deodorant. When I do buy hygiene products, I always look for natural products like Tom's of Maine. Not only do they use natural ingredients, but they also help the environment by reducing energy and using recyclable materials for their products.
Tom's of Maine also has a great children's toothpaste, and my kids love the flavor. I love that it's dye free and doesn't have any artificial ingredients. That is so important in an autism house!
I also love that Walmart carries Tom's of Maine products, so I can grab them while I'm doing my regular household shopping without making a special trip to the store.
Natural Chocolate Lip Balm Recipe
My daughter said she wanted a new lip balm to go with her strawberry Tom's of Maine toothpaste, so we made this chocolate lip balm for her. I used organic chocolate chips to keep it completely natural, but you could use regular chocolate chips.
What You Need
- 1 tablespoon shea butter
- 1 tablespoon beeswax pastilles
- 2 tablespoons safflower oil (or other carrier oil)
- 12 chocolate chips (use organic for a natural lip balm)
- Lip balm pots
- Pyrex measuring cup
Directions
- Place shea butter, beeswax, and oil in a glass measuring cup. Microwave on high at 30 second intervals, stirring between intervals. Mine took two 30-second intervals.
- Add chocolate chips and stir until melted. You shouldn't have to reheat to get them to melt.
- Pour in to lip balm pots.
