I got an Instant Pot for Christmas, so I use a lot of broth and gravy. Pressure cookers need a lot of moisture to work, so you have to add water or broth. I made my own chicken stock because I use it in so many recipes, but I don't generally make beef stock.
I have a lot of recipes that call for brown gravy mix packets, but I don't like using premade mixes. They are full of preservatives, extra salt, extra sugar, and starches.
This brown gravy mix recipe uses real ingredients without flour, sugar, or preservatives. It tastes so much better than the store bought stuff, and it's a lot cheaper.
ARROWROOT POWDER OR FLOUR?

I prefer arrowroot powder because it's gluten free. No one in my family is gluten free, but close friends of ours are. I can easily use this in recipes so they can eat the same food that we do.
If you don't mind the gluten, feel free to use the same amount of flour.
If you do use arrowroot, know that it doesn't work well with dairy. If you use brown gravy mix packets with sour cream or milk, it can get slimy. It won't affect the taste, and it will still be fine to eat, but the texture might be off.
BROWN GRAVY MIX RECIPE
INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup arrowroot powder
- 4 tablespoon beef granules
- 4 tablespoon garlic powder
- 4 tablespoon onion powder
- 2 teaspoon parsley
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
DIRECTIONS
STEP #1
Combine all ingredients in a bowl or mason jar.

Stir well. You can also blend in a bullet style blender, but I don't bother. It works just as well without this step.

Store in an airtight container for several weeks.

I use this mix most often with roast beef. In the slow cooker, I add a packet of brown gravy with Italian dressing and ranch dressing. I also use it with onion soup mix.
Of course, you can also use it to just make gravy or a base for soup. We just aren't big on gravy, so I don't do this often.

Ingredients
- 1 cup arrowroot powder
- 4 tablespoons beef granules
- 4 tablespoons garlic powder
- 4 tablespoons onion powder

- 1 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
1. Combine all ingredients in a mason jar or bowl and mix well.2. To make gravy, combine 1/4 cup mix with 1 cup water. Whisk while heating over medium heat. Add another cup of water when smooth.3. Use 1/4 cup dry mix to substitute for a pack of gravy mix.
