These cute DIY hanging air fresheners with essential oils are perfect for the car, a closet, or anywhere that needs a little freshening up.
If you have kids or pets, then I'm guessing that you have a need for an air freshener. I have three kids and four indoor pets, so yeah. The air could use some freshening with two teenage boys in one bedroom.
I was buying a fancy air freshener for my car, but even on sale, it wasn't cheap. I had to buy so many to get them cheap that they lost their scent before I could even use them.
I used my DIY gel air freshener in my car for a while, but it dried up a few months ago. I plan on making more of those, but I also wanted to try this DIY hanging air freshener with essential oils.
This DIY hanging air freshener is so easy to make, too. And you can use it in your car, closet, drawers, or anywhere else that needs a little freshening up.
This could even be a great project for scout troops. Just have them wear gloves when they are working with the essential oils or fragrance oils.
This could be a fun fundraiser for them to sell to make money for dues or a fun trip.
DIY HANGING AIR FRESHENER WITH ESSENTIAL OILS
I found three different wood shape cut outs. I think the bird cage was from Hobby Lobby. The mason jar and the bird were from Pat Catan's, so they might be available at Michael's too since Michael's bought Pat Catan's a few years ago.
These cute unfinished wood shapes are available on Amazon, so you can get them shipped right to your door. You'll need to drill a hole for ribbon through some of them though.
When I was shopping, I saw some wood shapes that were already painted. They were very cute, but I wasn't sure how the oils would adhere to painted wood. I think it would be best to use unfinished wood, so I left mine unfinished.
You could paint one side and use the other side for your oils I suppose. I liked the simple natural look though.
ESSENTIAL OILS
I wanted to use natural scents for my DIY air fresheners, so I used essential oils and natural fragrance oils. The fragrance oils that I used are all natural and are available in scents that don't have an essential oil, so it allows me to use scents that I can't get otherwise.
Crafty Bubbles just came out with new natural fragrance oils in the following scents:
- Chocolate
- Intense Berry
- Blueberry
- Apple
- Holiday Biscotti
- Very Berry Cobbler
- Mocha Mint
I love them because I can use different scents and not have to worry about bothering my asthma. After my severe attack from November to January, I still can't be around fragrance oils. These new scents don't bother me at all.
You can use a fragrance oil if you prefer. I'm not against fragrance oils; I just can't use them right now.
I used lemon essential oil, blueberry, and very berry cobbler. In case you can't tell, I'm definitely ready for spring. I'm moving on to spring and summer scents in hope that warm weather is near.

DIRECTIONS
STEP #1
There are two ways to make these DIY hanging air fresheners with essential oils.
The first way is to spray them with essential oils. This is my preferred method because they get covered evenly and don't get too soaked.
In a 2-ounce spray bottle, add 10 to 20 drops of essential oil and fill it up with water.
Spray the wood shape in a thin even coat and let dry.
You can keep the spray mixed up to reapply to your wood shape as needed. You can also use this spray to freshen fabric, but always do a spot test before you spray on fabric.
STEP #2
The second way is to use a paint brush.
You want to combine an ounce of water with 5 to 10 drops of essential oils or fragrance oils.
Dip a paint brush in it and paint the essential oil on the wood piece.
You can save the water in a sealed container to freshen your DIY air freshener as needed.
STEP #3
Either way you make them, let them dry completely. Then cut some cute ribbon and loop them through the wood shapes and tie a knot.
They are now ready to hang.
I made three air fresheners, so I have them in different areas. One is for my car because I like to have it smelling good all the time.
I put one in my closet. I just hung it on a hanger in the middle of the closet between my clothes and my husbands clothes so they smell good.
He can't smell, so don't tell him that his clothes smell like very berry cobber, k?
The third one I hung in the bathroom. It looks so cute with my decor, and it gives it a refreshing scent.
