TIPS FOR USING ESSENTIAL OILS WITH DOGS
The oils used in these recipes are all considered safe for pets, but that doesn't mean all dogs will accept them. Some dogs are more sensitive, and some just won't like the smell.
Both of my dogs liked the six natural essential oil recipes for dogs that I make, but yours may not like some of the scents just like you may not like the scent of some oils.
Let your pet sniff the product before you use it. If they react negatively, then don't use it on them.
When you are diffusing or using sprays, always let your dog leave the room if they want to.
Start slowly and gradually use more oils with your pets while they get used to them. I started with one drop of the blend in the diffuser and increased by a drop each time I used it.
PAW BALM RECIPE
This recipe can help protect your dog's delicate paws. These can get sore or sensitive in the winter from the cold or in the summer from hot sidewalks.
INGREDIENTS
- 1/2 tablespoon beeswax
- 2 teaspoons coconut oil
- 1/2 teaspoon almond oil
- 2 drops ginger essential oil
- 3 drops juniper berry essential oil
- 2 lip balm tubes
DIRECTIONS
Melt the beeswax and coconut oil in a double boiler or in a glass bowl in the microwave. If you microwave it, use 30 second intervals until melted.
Add the almond oil and essential oils. Stir well for at least 30 seconds. Pour into the lip balm tubes. I had a little left over, so I poured it into a little souffle cup
to use later.

Apply to the bottoms of your dog's paws for cracked or painful paws. It can also be used on pets and their humans for sore muscles.
PET ODOR ELIMINATOR SPRAY
Nacho sleeps with me, but he does have a blanket in his crate. This will help keep it fresh between washes. Dolph has a large pillow in the living room, so I use this on his pillow so it doesn't smell like dog.
INGREDIENTS
- 10 drops ginger essential oil
- 20 drops Peace and Quiet essential oil blend
- 2 ounces distilled water
- 2 ounce spray bottle
DIRECTIONS
Combine all ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake well.
Spray your dog's bed or other areas the smell like, well, dog. Cats may not like this blend, so avoid spraying areas they lay in.
FUR AND SKIN CONDITIONER
My poor Nacho is suffering from some food allergies, so I've been using this on him fur. His coat is so soft since we've been using this!
INGREDIENTS
- 4 tablespoons almond oil
- 10 drops juniper berry essential oil
- 6 drops ginger essential oil
- 6 drops citronella essential oil
- 1 ounce container
DIRECTIONS
Combine all ingredients in the 1 ounce container. Shake to combine.
Use on your pet's coat or skin to moisturize. This can also be applied the skin.
ITCHY SKIN ROLL ON
Nacho has been scratching like crazy with his allergies. The poor thing is suffering from spring allergies just like I am. He has a prescription, but I've been using this so he doesn't have to take the meds that make him sleepy.
INGREDIENTS
- 2 drops ginger essential oil
- 2 drops juniper berry essential oil
- 10 mL almond oil
- 10 mL roller bottle
DIRECTIONS
Add the essential oils to the roller bottle. Fill to the bottom of the neck with almond oil. Roll between your hands to mix.
Apply directly to itchy patches on your dog.
TICK AND MOSQUITO COLLAR
Use your dogs regular collar or a bandana for this easy to make tick and mosquito collar.
INGREDIENTS
- 20 drops juniper berry essential oil
- 10 drops citronella essential oil
- 2 tablespoons almond oil
- 1 cup distilled water
- Bandana or collar
- Container
DIRECTIONS
Combine the essential oils and water in a container. Stir well.
Soak a bandana or collar in the mixture. Let dry. Wrap around your dog's neck. Refresh collar as needed.
ANTI-ANXIETY DIFFUSER BLEND
Dolph is a big happy go lucky dog, but Nacho has some anxiety. He gets anxious, and then he yaps and starts to act like a little old man. I diffuses this to help him chill out a little.
INGREDIENTS
- 2 drops Peace and Quiet blend
- 1 drop juniper berry blend
or
- 60 drops Peace and Quiet blend
- 30 drops juniper berry
DIRECTIONS
Combine the essential oils in your diffuser or in an empty bottle. Use 1-3 drops of your blend in a diffuser.
