Heal dry lips and add moisture with this easy dandelion lip balm for dry lips. It's made from oil that is infused with dandelions for their healing effects on your lips and skin.
I may or may not have had to rush outside when I heard my husband start the John Deere so I could save some dandelions from a certain death. We actually didn't have a lot of dandelions this year.
With almost 12 acres of grass to mow, you'd think there would be 1000s of them, but they were just in certain spots this year. I did manage to pick a few cups worth of flowers to make some dandelion oil.
After I made the dandelion oil (learn how to make dandelion oil and learn about its benefits and uses here), I used it to make dandelion oil lotion bars and now this dandelion lip balm recipe.
This is an excellent homemade lip balm for dry lips. My lips are dry in the winter because of the heat, and they are dry in the summer due to the sun.
If you've ever had your lips burned from the sun, this is the lip balm recipe that you need.
This lip balm for dry lips is also great in the winter, so you may want to save your dried dandelions to infuse them in the fall for a fresh batch of dandelion oil lip balm in the fall and winter when lips are prone to dryness.

How to Make Dandelion Infused Oil
I devoted an entire post on to how to make dandelion oil and its benefits, so I won't repeat all of it here. By diffusing the flower and a carrier oil, you get the benefits of both the flower and the carrier oil.
I used dandelion infused oil because dandelions can help promote skin cell regeneration. They are also a natural anti-inflammatory, which is important for dry or chapped lips.
Dandelion infused oil can take from one to three weeks to make, so plan early to make this homemade lip balm for dry lips.
I infused my dandelions with chia seed oil for my solid lotion bars, so I used the same oil to make this dandelion oil lip balm recipe.
Chia seed oil is a luxurious oil and is a heavier oil. This will leave your lips feeling oily after you use it. If you want a lighter oil for your homemade lip balm for dry lips, I'll give some more suggestions below.
Chia seed oil is high in omega-3 fatty acids to moisturize your skin. It also strengthens the top layer of the skin to keep moisture against your skin.
I've made a lot of lip balms, and this is by far my favorite lip balm for dry lips.
If you would rather use a lighter oil for dandelion lip balm recipe, you can infuse your dandelions with other oils. Apricot oil and grapeseed oil are both dry oils, which means that soak into your skin quickly.
Sweet almond oil is dryish oil, meaning that is soaks in fairly quickly but not as quick as apricot or grapeseed. It's a great all purpose carrier oil, so you could use the infusion in other recipes.
Castor oil is a heavy oil, but it's wonderful to add to a lip balm for dry lips. Hemp seed oil and avocado oil are both on the heavier side, but they have a lot of qualities that help them heal dry or chapped lips.

If you'd rather buy already infused dandelion oil, you can get some on Etsy. You can also get dried dandelions on Etsy if they aren't in season.

Beeswax in Lip Balm
Beeswax is what makes this a lip balm instead of a thick oil. Beeswax isn't just a thickener though; it has benefits for your skin.
Beeswax creates a barrier on top of your lips. This helps trap the dandelion oil and the shea butter to your skin, so they can work longer and penetrate the skin deeper after you use this dandelion lip balm recipe.
Beeswax is also naturally anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial, which are both great qualities to have in a lip balm for dry lips.
Shea Butter
I chose shea butter for my dandelion lip balm recipe because it's very moisturizing for dry skin. It is said to boost collagen production, which is important to keep your lips looking good after you use a homemade lip balm for dry lips.
You could also use mango butter or cocoa butter. Cocoa butter will result in a harder lip balm recipe, which would be better suited to lip balm tubes than pots.

Dandelion Lip Balm Recipe Containers
One of the reasons that I love this recipe is that it fits perfectly in 12 lip balm tubes. I buy the Crafty Bubbles lip balm tubes, which come 12 in a pack. They are made in the USA, so that's an added bonus.
This time, I used lip balm pots. This is a softer lip balm recipe. It does work in the tubes, but I was out of tubes and had some pots from Crafty Bubbles.
This lip balm for dry lips recipe makes about 7.2 pots, so pour a little less to fill 8 or put your extra in a little souffle cup. I always keep souffle cups on hand when making things. I give the extras to friends or family who are always thrilled with them even if they are small.
Dandelion Lip Balm Recipe Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons dandelion infused oil (or buy it here)
- 1 tablespoon beeswax
- 2.5 teaspoons shea butter
- 12 lip balm tubes or 8 lip balm pots
Dandelion Lip Balm Recipe Directions
STEP #1
Place the dandelion infused oil, beeswax, and shea butter in a Pyrex measuring cup. Place it in a pan of water to create a double boiler.
I set my measuring cup on a canning jar ring to elevate it so it's not touching the bottom of the pan. Never heat carrier oils over direct heat.
I don't recommend using a microwave to melt shea butter. If shea butter gets too hot, it can get gritty.
STEP #2
Remove the melted mixture from the double boiler and let cool for a few minutes.
STEP #3
Carefully pour the dandelion lip balm recipe into lip balm pots or tubes. Let cool completely.
Now you have a very moisturizing dandelion lip balm recipe that's perfect for dry or cracked lips!
Use this homemade lip balm for dry lips to soothe your lips after spending time in the sun to hep your lip heal and add moisture.
I hope you love this dandelion lip balm recipe!
