How to make a unicorn sugar scrub exfoliating soap bar recipe. This cute bar is full of glitter and smells like Unicorn Kisses with a natural fragrance oil blend.
I've been making melt and pour soap for something like 15 years now. I'm not a noob, but that doesn't mean that every project comes out perfect.
I prefer not to say mistakes because I did learn something from the experience. So we will channel Bob Ross and call it a happy accident.
A few weeks ago, I picked up an adorable unicorn soap mold. It was fairly large, so I decided to make some layered ombre unicorn soaps.
I got out my supplies, I melted, and I started pouring. I was so excited to unmold it, but that excitement left as soon as I saw what it looked like.
To be fair, Dakota loved the ombre unicorn soaps. She declared it the best soap ever. I mean it was purple, glittery, and shaped like a unicorn, so there's that.
It wasn't a total flop. It was cute, but you couldn't really tell that it was ombre. I went from clear to deep purple, but it just looked purple.
I went back and forth on posting it. From the top it was purple and glittery. It just seemed rather basic. I want to give you more than just how to pour soap into a mold.
So I turned it into a unicorn sugar scrub exfoliating soap bar recipe. It's a great bar for the shower, especially before shaving because it exfoliates the skin.
UNICORN SUGAR SCRUB EXFOLIATING SOAP BAR RECIPE
Although this exfoliating soap bar recipe wasn't what I meant to make originally, I am really happy with how it turned out in the end. It is cute, and I really like the mold.
It smells amazing too. Who doesn't want to smell like a unicorn kiss?
And it's glittery. Give me aaaaaaaallllll the glitter!
MELT AND POUR SOAP
I used clear melt and pour soap base for the unicorns and white for the sugar scrub part of this exfoliating soap bar recipe. You can use either base for either part. I've used both clear and white for the sugar scrub part, and both look nice. (You can see the clear base in my Easter bunny solid sugar cube soaps.)
I used Crafty Bubbles melt and pour soap. You can use any soap base you'd like. If you do mix clear and white soap bases, it's best to use them from the same company. Sometimes they don't adhere well because of the different melting points.
GLITTER
I used a body safe glitter with fine particles for this unicorn sugar scrub exfoliating soap bar recipe. I've used it several times, and it works very well in soaps and stays suspended.
There's also a biodegradable glitter. Next time I buy glitter, I'll buy that.
MICA
I colored my unicorns with mica. I really prefer the mica colorant over liquid because it doesn't bleed or fade. It gives me brighter colors, too.
I bought this set of mica. Each bag has 0.1 ounces. It doesn't seem like a lot, but this set will last me forever. It has a nice variety of colors, too.
SWEET ALMOND OIL
I used sweet almond oil to add some extra moisturizing to this sugar scrub exfoliating soap bar recipe. It's a great all purpose carrier oil and one I use often. It's high in vitamins A and E for the skin.
You can use any carrier oil in its place. Good ones to try are grapeseed oil, avocado oil, or sunflower oil. You can learn more about the different carrier oils in my book Carrier Oils.
UNICORN KISSES NATURAL FRAGRANCE OIL
I used the new Unicorn Kisses natural fragrance oil from Right Note (Crafty Bubbles). It smells amazing! It's fruity with some berry and I think some banana. It smells like summer and carefree days.
It's available in their Bakery set of natural fragrance oils and essential oil blends.
MOLDS
I used this adorable unicorn mold. Each soap is about 2 ounces, so it's pretty decent sized. Each unicorn could definitely be its own bar of soap.
The unicorns just fit inside the Crafter's Choice round mold. Mine is old, so it's yellow, but it's the same size as the new one.

SUPPLIES
DIRECTIONS
STEP #1
Cut the clear melt and pour soap into 1 inch cubes and microwave in a 2-cup Pyrex measuring cup. Add the glitter, mica, and 1/2 teaspoon Unicorn Kisses fragrance oil and stir well.
STEP #2
Pour into the unicorn soap mold. Let sit until fully hardened. About two hours. Then unmold and set aside.
Weigh the sugar and place in a medium sized bowl. Add the sweet almond oil and 1/2 teaspoon Unicorn Kisses fragrance oil.
Weigh and melt 2.5 ounces of white melt and pour soap at 30 second intervals. Pour it into the sugar mixture and stir well.
The soap will set up quickly since the sugar is at room temperature.
Pour the soap into the round mold and spray with rubbing alcohol. Let it set up. Reserve about 2 ounces of this mixture for the next step.
Set the unicorns on top of the hardened sugar scrub soaps. Remelt the soap left over from step 5. The soap will be thin and the sugar will start to dissolve.
Spray the top of the white soap and the bottom of the unicorns with rubbing alcohol. Carefully pour the soap around the unicorn to hold them in place. Spray the top with rubbing alcohol to get rid of bubbles. Let sit until completely cooled.
Now you have unicorn sugar scrub exfoliating soap bars! This soap is a great bar for the body or for your hands. It gently exfoliates, so I use it before shaving for a closer shave.
I also keep it in the kitchen to use as a scrubby bar after getting dirty while cooking.
