How to make a kid safe magnesium spray for sleep. This uses a blend of essential oil that are all safe for kids over the age of 2.
Sleep. No one here gets enough I have two kids with delayed sleep cycles, so they sleep from 5 am to 11 am or noon. Thank goodness for homeschooling.
Ironically, my only neurotypical child doesn't sleep. One with autism sleeps and the other one does not.
The one with autism that doesn't sleep didn't sleep for more than 90 minutes at a time until he was four and a half years old. Even now, he can be awake for more than 35 hours before he falls asleep for a few hours.
I have treated my kids with autism with natural supplements after doing extensive research. I won't go into all of that here because I'm not a doctor or pretend to be one.
I will say that magnesium is one of the things that we tried that we continue to use. I had a magnesium oil spray that I was using. We ran out of that, so I wanted to make a magnesium oil recipe with essential oils.
We use the magnesium spray for sleep at night just because nights aren't as chaotic as days. That's why I used a kid safe night time essential oil blend. You can use different oils or leave them out if you want to use this at other times during the day.
This magnesium spray recipe makes a magnesium oil but it isn't really an oil; it's a mixture of magnesium chloride and water. The mixture feels oily, so it's often referred to as magnesium oil.
Magnesium chloride flakes readily dissolve into magnesium and chloride when you dilute them in water. This makes it easy for your body to absorb the magnesium when you make a magnesium spray for sleep.
Your body uses magnesium in many different functions. If you have a deficiency, you may experience problems with one or more of the following:
- Nerve function
- Muscle function
- Blood sugar levels
- Blood pressure levels
- Bone health
- Asthma
- Migraines
- ADHD
- Insomnia
Most Americans are deficient in magnesium. It's found in leafy greens, dairy, nuts, seeds, and legumes, but most people do not eat enough of these foods for their body's needs.
You can supplement with a magnesium pill or capsule. You can also supplement topically with a magnesium spray recipe (sometimes called a magnesium oil recipe).
Though most people are deficient in magnesium, it's important to talk to your doctor before making this magnesium oil spray and using it. Too much magnesium can cause cramps, nausea, and diarrhea. Extremely high doses can cause irregular heart beat or cardiac arrest.
What are the Benefits of Magnesium Oil Spray?
Taking magnesium internally in a pill or supplement may cause GI problems in some people. You can absorb magnesium through the skin, and there's little risk of GI upset.
Magnesium oil benefits may include:
- Pain relief
- Muscle pain relief
- Stronger bones
- Better sleep
- Better dental health
- Reduce oily skin
- Reduction in PMS symptoms
- Migraine relief
How do You Use Magnesium Oil Spray?
Learn how to use a magnesium oil spray before you use it for the first time.
This magnesium oil recipe can tingle the first time you use it. As you continue to use it, the tingling should go away. You may want to use it on the hips, abdomen, or upper arms to reduce tingling. Also change the area that you apply it on so that spot doesn't get too sensitive to the magnesium oil. If you are using it for pain relief, apply it directly to the problem area.
I use a spray bottle for easier application. I just spray and massage. Don't keep spraying after the skin stops absorbing the oil because this will be wasteful.
Let the magnesium oil sit for 30 minutes before rinsing or wiping it away. It may leave a white residue, so you can wipe that away after half an hour.
You should plan to use a magnesium oil spray every day. This helps boost magnesium levels in your body gradually and prevents it from dropping again.
Start with six sprays each day for adults. You can work your way up to 15 or 20 sprays per day. If you have diarrhea, reduce the number of sprays per day or stop using the spray.
This magnesium spray recipe is very easy to make. It only has two ingredients, and you can also add essential oils if you want.

Does Magnesium Oil Help You Sleep?
Yes, magnesium oil can improve sleep. Magnesium can help your brain relax, which is important for good sleep. Magnesium can help regulate neurotransmitters and melatonin, both of which are essential for good sleep.
Studies using mice have shown that magnesium supplements can help improve the quality of sleep.
You can take a supplement daily or make this magnesium spray for sleep.
Magnesium Flakes
Most people think of Epsom salts when they think of magnesium, but there are also magnesium flakes. Epsom salts are made of magnesium and sulfate; magnesium flakes are made from magnesium chloride.
I also used magnesium flakes in this pumpkin spice chai tea bath salt recipe.
Magnesium chloride, the flakes, are easier for your body to absorb. They are also gentler on the skin, which I wanted for this kid safe magnesium spray for sleep.
Essential Oils
You don't have to use essential oils for this magnesium spray for sleep. You can omit them, but I wanted to use kid safe oils that promote relaxation and sleep.
I used the following blend:
- 2 drops cedarwood
- 2 drops German chamomile
- 2 drops lavender
- 1 drops vetiver
- 1 drop blue tansy
These oils help promote relaxation and sleep, and they are safe for kids. I use the same blend in a roll on for nights when they don't want the magnesium spray for sleep.
You could also use the Simply Earth Sleepy essential oil blend to make a magnesium spray for sleep. It's kid safe for children over 10.
