I've made a lot of DIY projects for personal use and for my blog, but one thing that's been on my list that I haven't quite gotten around to is an essential oil reed diffuser DIY. Reed diffuser are great for a light scent in a small area. They don't have a big throw, so they aren't typically used for large rooms.
The March Simply Earth Essential Oil Recipe Box is packed with goodies to make for a natural home. One of the projects is how to make essential oil reed diffuser with water and vodka. It also has several blends to make to use in your reed diffuser with the oils in the box.
For those not familiar with the Simply Earth box, it's a monthly subscription box that comes with four essential oils and supplies to make 6 natural DIYs. Each box has a theme, so I've made skin care products, products for pets or kids, natural cleaners, and more.

What is a Reed Diffuser?
Reed diffusers are an easy and inexpensive way to add fragrance or use aromatherapy in a room. They give off a constant light scent without using electricity or a flame.
You combine essential oils with either an oil or in this case water and vodka and pour into a vase. Then set reed diffuser inside. They wick up the water or oil and give off a light scent.
You can also make a passive diffuser like this succulent essential oil diffuser to naturally scent a room.
Can I Make My Own Reed Diffuser Oil?
Yes, you can. Most recipes call for a carrier oil, but I like this recipe with water and vodka.
Carrier oils travel up the reed very slowly. For best results, use a light oil like grape seed oil or apricot oil. Don't use olive oil or regular vegetable oil from your cupboard because it will travel too slow.
If you do use a carrier oil, use the same amount of oil as you do water and vodka for this recipe. Carrier oils aren't cheap, so it's probably cheaper to use water and vodka.
I use a mid to low grade vodka for making DIY recipes. I also use it in my homemade vanilla extract, so I usually have it in the cupboard at home.
Distilled Water
I recommend using distilled water to make this essential oil reef diffuser DIY with water and vodka. Your tap water can have bacteria in it, which can grow creepy crawlies in your reed diffuser water.
Vodka
The vodka is there for two reasons. First, it's a preservative. It helps kill germs so the water doesn't get moldy or get bacteria. Yes, I did just say to use distilled water for best results, but still use the vodka.
Vodka also helps the scent of the essential oils last longer. Essential oils won't mix with the water, but they will mix with vodka. For best results, combine the vodka and essential oils and then add the water.
You can use witch hazel or rubbing alcohol for the vodka, but vodka really does work best in this recipe.
You'll need a reed diffuser container that will allow several inches of the reeds to stick out above the top of the container so that they give off the scent.
The reeds that are in the box are short, but I really wanted to use it because it so stinking cute. I actually put a small cup inside of it upside down and then another cup on top of it to elevate the reeds.
This vase is one of my thrift store finds. The squirrel was just too cute to pass up! You can usually find it on Etsy in pink, cream, mint green, or another color.

Essential Oil Blends for Reed Diffusers
You can use your favorite essential oils or blends. I'm going to share the ones that are included with the Simply Earth recipe box.
Creativity Zone Diffuser Blend
- 3 drops orange essential oil
- 2 drops Energy blend
- 1 drop cypress essential oil
Whimsy Diffuser Blend
- 3 drops orange essential oil
- 2 drops patchouli essential oil
Joy Diffuser Blend
- 2 drops orange essential oil
- 1 drops patchouli essential oil
- 1 drop cypress essential oil
- 1 drop Energy blend
It's Okay to Grieve Blend
- 2 drops cypress essential oil
- 2 drops orange essential oil
- 1 drop patchouli essential oil
You can use one of these essential oil diffuser blends or use your favorite blend or single oil. If I am going to be infusing it often, I like to make the blend in a small bottle and use that for the diffuser rather than measure when I'm making the oil.
