Calendula is my favorite herb for natural skin care. I use it often to make salves, soaps, and more. I use both the dried herb and the infused oil in DIY skin care recipes.
I learned how to make calendula salve recipe with coconut oil several years ago. It's one of my favorite skin care salves to make, but I hadn't blogged it until now. It's time to share my calendula salve DIY with all of you so you can make it yourself.
Earlier this week, I shared how I make a calendula infused oil, and now I'm going to show you how to use that oil to make a calendula salve DIY.
I used a base salve recipe that I love. It makes a soft salve, so it's easy to use on your skin. It's firm enough to be a salve, but it's soft enough to spread across your skin easily.
I also added some essential oils that I love for skin health in my calendula salve recipe.

Calendula is a healing herb. I use this salve for very dry skin, and it's excellent for dry cuticles and dry hands.
Is Calendula The Same as Marigold?
Calendula and marigold are in the Asteraceae family of plants. They look similar and both look like daisies, which are also from the same family.
However, calendula and marigolds are not the same plant.
Calendula Infused Oil
Calendula is great for your skin. It's said to promote skin healing, so it's good for dry skin, eczema, and even acne scarring. It's also said to boost firmness and hydrate the skin when used topically.
When you infuse the dried flowers in a carrier oil, you get the benefits of calendula and the benefits of the oil.
I have an entire post devoted to how to make calendula infused oil and its benefits, so I won't repeat it all here. Head over to that post to learn both the quick warm infusion method and the cold infusion method.
When you infuse an herb in an oil, make sure you use dried herbs so there's no water in it. I get my calendula at an Amish greenhouse. You can buy 4 ounces to 1 pound from Starwest Botanicals or Mountain Rose Herbs.
There are several shops on Etsy to get smaller quantities of dried calendula so you don't have to buy a whole pound. Atelieremmarose sells dried calendula from 1/4 pound to 8 pounds.
I infused my calendula in sweet almond oil. Sweet almond oil is a great all purpose carrier oil. It's high in vitamins and minerals for dry skin. Sweet almond oil is a dry oil, so it soaks into the skin quickly.
You can also use one of the following carrier oils:

Shea Butter
Shea butter is my favorite natural butter for skin, so it was the obvious choice for a calendula salve recipe. It's high in vitamins A, E, and F for your skin. It's said to promote collagen production.
It's high in fatty acids to moisturize the skin, but it's not greasy in this calendula salve DIY. It helps form a barrier on top of your skin to lock in moisture and hold the other ingredients to your skin.

Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is a heavy oil, but I love it for salves. It's said to boost elasticity and collage production in the skin. It's high in vitamins A and E for antioxidants in this calendula salve recipe.
It's naturally antimicrobial, so it can help prevent a secondary infection. It's also anti-inflammatory, which is important when you have eczema or dry skin.
Beeswax
Beeswax helps turn this into a firmer consistency so it's a a calendula salve DIY and not a lotion. Beeswax is naturally anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial.
It also helps your skin by forming a protective barrier on top of the skin. This helps lock in moisture and holds the other ingredients in this calendula salve recipe close to your skin so they work better.
Essential Oils
I added essential oils to my calendula salve recipe for their aromatherapy benefits. I used my favorite essential oil for skin: helichrysum, blue tansy, lavender, and frankincense.
Helichrysum essential oil is said to promote skin healing. It's natural antimicrobial, which can help prevent infection and the skin heals.
I don't use blue tansy essential oil often, but it's an amazing oil for the skin. Blue tansy is calming and cooling for the skin. It's great for irritated skin from eczema or dry skin. It's also high in antioxidants.
Lavender essential oil is a gentle oil. It's naturally antimicrobial and promotes healing.
Frankincense essential oil isn't my favorite for the smell, but it is among my top favorites for skin. It's great for dry skin, and it's said to reduce scars and stretch marks. It's used to promote skin cell turnover for better looking skin.
