Summer kind of sneaked up on us this year, didn't it? One week wearing our winter clothes and watching the forecast for snow. The next week we were turning on the AC and finding our flip flops.
While I was more than ready for summer, my skin was not. It was dull and needed some love. While I do enjoy a good emulsified sugar scrub, I wanted a super easy sugar scrub recipe.
This is so simple, and you can make it and use it right away. This blueberry lemon body scrub is great for your hands, feet, and body, but don't use it on your face because it's too harsh.

How Do You Make a Simple Sugar Scrub Recipe?
You really only need two ingredients to make a simple sugar scrub: sugar and an oil.
The general rule is to use twice as much sugar as oil. So if you use 1 cup of sugar, use half of a cup of oil.
These measurements can be adjusted.
How Do You Make A Sugar Scrub Without Coconut Oil?
You can replace solid coconut oil with another carrier oil. You can use fractionated coconut oil (liquid), sweet almond oil, argan oil, avocado oil, olive oil, or apricot kernel oil like I used for this blueberry lemon sugar scrub recipe.
Coconut oil is a solid at room temperature, so your scrub will be thinner.
How Long Can You Keep a Homemade Sugar Scrub?
About three to six months as long as water doesn't get in it. If you like to use the scrub in the shower, be very careful not to put wet hands into the scrub or get water in the container.
If water gets in it, it can grow mold since there's no preservative.
How Do You Store a Homemade Sugar Scrub?
You can use any airtight waterproof container. I've been known to reuse clean food containers.
If you want to get fancy, these 8 ounce jars are cute to store scrubs in. They also make a good inexpensive packaging for gifts.
What Kind of Sugar Do You Use in a Sugar Scrub?
I used a coarse sugar called turbinado sugar, better known as Sugar in the Raw. It has a larger size than white sugar, so it scrubs the skin better.
You can also use white sugar. I prefer the larger size, especially for my legs, hands, and feet.
If you have sensitive skin, use brown sugar. The scent of the brown sugar will slightly alter the scent of this blueberry lemon sugar scrub recipe, so keep that in mind.
Generally, the larger the granule, the more abrasive it is. Do not use turbinado sugar or white sugar on your face.

Apricot Kernel Oil
My skin gets really dry in the winter, so I reach for coconut oil, chia seed oil, and heavier oils. For summer, however, I want something that absorbs quickly.
I also wanted to use an oil that was high in antioxidants for my skin since I spend so much time in the sun. Antioxidants help protect the cells in the skin from damage from free radicals.
Antioxidants work by stopping oxidation. They give up electrons to free radicals, which neutralizes them.
This easy sugar scrub recipe won't make your skin look younger right away, but using antioxidants regularly can help reduce the signs of aging and prevent damage.
Since I spend a lot of time outside in the summer, I want to use a carrier oil with antioxidants to reduce sun damage and protect my skin.
Apricot kernel oil is high in vitamin A. It can promote healing and skin health, and it's naturally anti-inflammatory.
This is a dry oil, so it soaks into the skin quickly. It won't leave your skin feeling oily or greasy after using it.
Fragrance
I used lemon essential oil and a blueberry natural fragrance oil.
Lemon essential oil tones, tightens, and firms the skin. It also helps control oil production and works to shrink pores naturally.
I use a natural blueberry fragrance oil from Crafty Bubbles. It smells just like fresh blueberries!
It's not available online, but I did find a natural blueberry fragrance oil on Etsy.

How Do You Use a Sugar Scrub?
You can use a sugar scrub once or twice a week. It can irritate your skin if you use them too often.
Here's how to get the best results from your easy sugar scrub recipe:
- Wet your skin. This helps by softening your skin so you can exfoliate more dead skin cells off. It's best to take a shower to get your skin wet for about 10 minutes.
- Wash your skin. If you don't wash, exfoliating will remove dirt and not dead skin cells.
- Massage the scrub into your skin. Get about 1/4 of a cup of sugar scrub in your hands. Then massage in a circular motion all over your body. This helps increase circulation and boosts collagen production while removing dead skin cells.
- Rise well. Rinse with warm water. You do not need to use more soap unless you feel greasy or oily.
- Pat dry. Do not rub your skin vigorously.
- Use lotion. If your skin feels tight or dry, use lotion all over.
