Learn how to make a coconut oil deodorant recipe with baking soda or arrowroot powder, zinc oxide, and essential oils. This natural deodorant recipe with beeswax is easy to make, and it helps keep you smelling fresh all day long.
Natural deodorant is a relatively new journey for me. I grew up using traditional deodorants and tried a few brands, but I didn't like how it worked.
But now I have a teenaged daughter, and I want to start her off with healthier choices. So last spring seemed like a good time to start since I was going to be stuck at home anyway.
I normally buy my natural deodorant, but this coconut oil deodorant recipe was in the January 2021 Simply Earth essential oil recipe box, so I gave it a shot.
This box actually has two recipes that you'll love: the BO Be Gone Natural Deodorant and BO Emergency Back Up Roll On.
I'll share both with you today because they really complement each other well.

Switching to Natural Deodorant
Let's first talk about using natural deodorant. I got into switching to natural deodorant in another post, so click over there for more information.
Traditional deodorants work by plugging your pores so you don't sweat. They also kill the bacteria on your skin, and that bacteria is what causes odors.
Since natural deodorant doesn't plug your pores, there is a break through period. Your body will start to release what's been trapped in your pores, and you will start to stink.
This is why I recommend using an armpit detox recipe when you make the transition. This helps pull all of what's been trapped out to ease the transition period.
Wild Root Deodorant
When I transitioned, I used Wild Root Deodorant. This is the sister company to Simply Earth, and they use Simply Earth essential oils.
While this coconut oil deodorant recipe is a great one, if you don't want to make your own, then I recommend Wild Root.
Is Beeswax Good for Deodorant?
Yes, beeswax is good to use in a coconut oil deodorant DIY. It helps moisturize the skin and firms up the recipe.
Without it, this would be very soft and could melt in the summer.
Is Baking Soda Good for Deodorant?
Baking soda is an excellent natural deodorizer for your armpits and to use all over your home. However, it can be irritating to some people.
Baking soda is slightly alkaline, and your skin is slightly acidic. For some people, this can cause redness and sometimes itching or a rash.
For some people, using half baking soda and half cornstarch or arrowroot powder helps tame the reaction.
You can also omit it from this recipe and just use cornstarch or arrowroot powder for your coconut oil deodorant recipe.
Arrowroot Powder vs Cornstarch in Deodorant
As a general rule, I don't use cornstarch in my DIY beauty recipes. Cornstarch is almost always made with GMO corn, but arrowroot is not.
Arrowroot powder is also less irritating than cornstarch. If a coconut oil deodorant DIY has irritated you in the past, then you might want to try using arrowroot powder next time.
Coconut Oil in Deodorant
Coconut oil makes a solid base, so it's a good oil to use in this coconut oil deodorant recipe. Coconut oil can get soft or melt at high temperatures, so I added beeswax to harden it.
Coconut oil has natural antimicrobial properties. It can kill germs, including fungus and bacteria, when you apply it to your skin.
Zinc Oxide
Zinc oxide is usually used in sunscreens, but it's also an excellent way to combat body odor naturally. I really like that Simply Earth added it to this recipe!
Zinc oxide is also a mild astringent and has mild antiseptic properties. It doesn't do well on it's own to kill germs, but it gives the other ingredients a boost.
Zinc Oxide also helps treat and prevent minor skin irritations. It can help with rashes, burns, chafing, and other minor irritations.
Essential Oils
Simply Earth uses BO Be Gone essential oil blend for this coconut oil deodorant recipe. This is my second bottle of BO Be Gone, and I really like it!
BO Be Gone is a blend of:
- Patchouli
- Ylang Ylang
- Sandalwood, Lavender
- Sweet Orange
This blend isn't just for a coconut oil deodorant DIY. I use it in my laundry detergent and to make a natural fabric refresher spray. I also use it in my home remedies for smelly feet.
BO Be Gone is also really good for your hair! I add a few drops to my DIY easy hair masks for dry, damaged hair.
BO Be Gone Coconut Oil Deodorant Recipe Ingredients

- 1 tablespoon beeswax
- 1/4 cup arrowroot powder (or cornstarch)
- 1/4 cup baking soda

- Cardboard deodorant tube
BO Be Gone Coconut Oil Deodorant Recipe Directions
Step #1
Melt the coconut oil and beeswax in a double boiler.
Step #2
Remove from heat carefully. Add essential oils and stir well.
Step #3
Add arrowroot powder, baking soda, and zinc oxide. Stir well. This will cause the coconut oil deodorant recipe to cool quickly and solidify. You can reheat it if necessary.
Step #4

This is a great natural deodorant recipe with beeswax. Use it daily to fight off odors. Remember that there will be a transition period when you switch, so give it a week or two before you give up.
Every natural deodorant has its limitations. If you find that you need some emergency help, try the Simply Earth BO Emergency Back Up Roll On. This recipe is also in the January 2021 recipe box.

If omiting the baking soda, does one simply up the arrowroot to 1/2 cup or is there a measurement difference between arrowroot and baking soda? Thanks!
