DIY Essence for Face With Essential Oils

Learn how to make DIY essence for face and how to make your own face mist.  This is an easy recipe made with essential oils for a soothing face spray recipe.  Use it as an essence before a serum or before makeup to moisturize and prep your skin for makeup.

I just got my March 2021 Simply Earth essential oil recipe box, and it's a good one.  The theme this month is beauty.

I was excited for the new oils because three are new to me.  Today, I'm going to share the DIY facial essence recipe.

I use this face spray recipe under my serum, but you can also use it as an extra moisture boost during the day or use it before your makeup.

What Does Essence Do For Your Face?

Use an essence right after cleaning.  It's water based, so it penetrates deeper into your skin.  It acts sort of like a primer for your skin care products.

You can use this DIY essence for face under your primer as part of your skin care routine or as a makeup primer.  Personally, I use it as an essence and follow with a serum and then my moisturizer.

This DIY facial essence is also good to use if you've done your morning skin care routine and didn't apply makeup and want to apply it later in the day.  This will soothe and hydrate your skin and act as a natural makeup primer.

How Do You Make Homemade Face Mist?

You can make a face mist spray DIY with just a few simple ingredients.  For this recipe, I'm using a homemade hydrosol, aloe vera, glycerin, and a preservative.

It's easy to learn how to make your own face mist.  If you don't want to make your own essential oil hydrosol, you can use a premade hydrosol.

Does Face Mist Do Anything?

Yes, this face mist spray recipe helps soothe and hydrate your skin.  It also helps your skin absorb more ingredients from your serum and moisturizer.

The glycerin helps hydrate your skin, and it also makes a great natural makeup primer.

How Long Does DIY Face Mist Last?

A water based face mist spray DIY without a preservative will only last about a week if stored in the fridge.  For that reason, I modified Simply Earth's recipe to include a preservative.

With a preservative, this facial mist recipe will last about three months.

If you do not use a preservative, then it is imperative that you store this DIY essence for face in the fridge and discard after a week.

Can Facial Mist Replace Moisturizer?

It depends.  This natural face mist recipe has aloe vera and a hydrosol, so it nourishes and moisturizes your skin.

If your skin is oily or normal, this DIY face mist recipe may be enough for your skin.  However, if you have dry skin, then you will likely need a moisturizer.

Is Face Mist Good For Oily Skin?

Yes, this face mist spray DIY is good for oily skin.  The essential oils used to make the hydrosol are soothing.  The aloe vera is also soothing.

Can I Use Face Mist at Night?

Yes, you can can and should use this essential oil face mist recipe at night.  You can use it under your serum and moisturizer both morning and night.

Can You Use Face Mist Without Makeup?

Yes, this DIY essence for face is versatile.  It makes a great spray to soothe and hydrate your skin, and it's a good natural makeup primer.

You can absolutely use this natural face mist recipe without makeup.

Are Face Mist and Toner the Same?

No, a toner and this face spray recipe are not the same.  Toners cleanse and tone the skin, but a face mist spray DIY will hydrate the skin.

Which is Better Face Mist or Toner?

Toner and this face spray recipe are two different things.  I use both a toner and a DIY face mist recipe during my skin care routine.

Best Essential Oils for Essential Oil Face Mist Recipe

I am using Beauty Within essential oil blend and to make a DIY facial essence.  Beauty Within is a blend of Myrrh, Frankincense, Rosemary, and Lavender essential oils.

It was formulated to renew dull skin and help reduce fine lines.

Palmarosa essential oil is often used in place of rose essential oil.  It smells similar, but it's much lower in price.  It can promote healthy skin when used topically.

I find that creating your own essential oil hydrosol is best for a face mist with essential oils.  Otherwise, you would would need to use a carrier oil and an emulsifier.

Preservatives

Since this natural face mist recipe is water based, it does need a preservative.  You can make it without  a preservative, but you'll need to store it in the fridge.  You should toss it after 5-7 days because it can grow mold and other nasties.

I recommend using Germaben II.  Germaben II is a liquid preservative with a broad spectrum.  It is used to prevent mold and bacteria from growing in DIY bath and body products made with water.  It has a wide pH range of 3.0 to 7.5, and it's what I recommend using for a DIY facial essence.

If you do choose to make this essential oil face mist recipe without a preservative, then replace the preservative portion with more of your homemade hydrosol.  Thus, you would add an extra 0.5 grams of hydrosol for a total of 39 grams.

DIY Essence for Face Tips and Notes

  • You'll be making your own hydrosol to make an essential oil face mist recipe.  You can learn more about how to make a hydrosol with essential oils here.
  • You must filter the water before making the DIY face essence.  The essential oils will not mix with the water, and they can cause redness or irritation if they come in contact with your skin undiluted.
  • You will need need a preservative to make a DIY face mist recipe.  I recommend Germaben II.
  • If you do not use a preservative, store in the fridge and discard after a week.
  • I did modify the recipe slightly from the Simply Earth recipe.  Theirs called for almond oil, but I swapped it for aloe vera.  I also added the preservative.

DIY Essence for Face Ingredients

You will need the following ingredients for a face mist spray DIY:

  • Essential oil hydrosol - You will make your own hydrosol using distilled water and Beauty Within blend and palmarosa essential oil.
  • Aloe vera- I replaced the oil in the original recipe with aloe vera.  Aloe is soothing and has many benefits for your skin.
  • Glycerin - Glycerin is a humectant, so it helps hydrate your skin.  It's also slightly sticky, so it helps hold your makeup in place.
  • Germaben II - This is a preservative used for water based products to prevent bacteria and other organisms from growing.

  • Beauty Within essential oil blend
