How to Make DIY Aroma Stones

How to make DIY aroma stones for an easy passive diffuser.  These are made with essential oils and naturally scent a room for aromatherapy.  This is an easy DIY project and looks pretty sitting in a bowl on a desk or in small spaces.

These DIY aroma stones are a fun project that you can make in an afternoon.  They are made with essential oils for an inexpensive passive diffuser that's perfect for small spaces.

There are a few recipes to make aroma rocks, but I chose this one because it has common ingredients.  There is a recipe with plaster of Paris that works really well too, but I like that this one has kitchen staples.

I used a fun new blend from Simply Earth called Lava.  I just got it last month when it was released, and I am obsessed!

I've been diffusing it in my office and at home because it's such a nice blend.  It was perfect for these DIY aroma stones.

Can You Put Essential Oils on Rocks?

Yes, actually you can!  I used river rocks to make a succulent DIY essential oil diffuser.

For best results, you'll want to use lava rocks.  They are more porous, so they hold more oils.

How Do You Use Essential Oils to Scent a Room?

You can use an essential oil diffuser for short periods of time.  I use mine in 15 minute bursts.

You can also make one of the following to naturally scent a room:

Essential Oils for DIY Aroma Stones

I used Lava, which is a new blend from Simply Earth.  It's a blend of Grapefruit, Blood Orange, Ho Wood, and Sandalwood Essential Oils.

It's my favorite blend so far, and it smells amazing!  I like it because it's so uplifting.  I use it in my office a lot.

I also recommend the following blends for DIY aroma stones:

Tips for Making DIY Aroma Stones

Boil your water before you use it.  Let it cool completely before using.  It should be at room temperature.

You'll notice in the supply photos that I started using a mold.  I used a gemstone mold to make gemstones, which I thought would be super cute.

However, they took a week to dry.  They work and function like they should, but the tops are not smooth at all.

I think a mold could work if you add a lot less water or keep adding more flour.

I used mica powder to color my aroma rocks, but food coloring would also work well.  I used quite a bit of mica, so keep that in mind.

You will need to add extra flour to your DIY aroma stones.  I just set a bowl of flour with a spoon next to me and kept scooping.

If you want two scents, divide the dough in half and then add the essential oils.  Cut the amount in half.

To refresh your scented rocks, place a drop or two of essential oils on the stones and stir them gently.  This may discolor your stones, but they will last a few more weeks.
