This natural simmering potpourri is easy to make, and you can use a Crock Pot slow cooker, stove top, or Instant Pot potpourri.
I used my Instant Pot, but I'll have directions for each method below.

What Do You Put in Simmering Potpourri?

Can You Simmer Any Potpourri?
Technically, yes, you can simmer any potpourri. However, I recommend making sure your potpourri is natural and hasn't been treated with any chemicals or has fragrance oils added.
The fragrance oils and any chemicals that might be added may not be safe for heating. It could cause respiratory problems.
If you want to buy dried potpourri that can be used in a dish and for a Crock Pot potpourri, then buy potpourri that's made for simmering.
Do You Add Water to Potpourri?
Generally, you do not add water to potpourri. It sits in a bowl and looks pretty and smells pretty.
However, you will add water for fall stovetop potpourri. It prevents the fruit and spices from burning while you simmer.
How Do You Make Potpourri Smell Stronger?
If you want a strong scent from your fall potpourri recipes, then I recommend adding a few drops of essential oils. Add 1-2 drops of your favorite essential oil or blend to your Crock Pot potpourri.
I recommend one of the following essential oils:
- Lemon essential oil
- Rosemary essential oil
- Cinnamon essential oil
- Clove essential oil
- Ginger essential oil
- Winter Spice blend
- Gingerbread blend
- Autumn Air blend
Or try one of the best fall essential oil blends. You can also make a pumpkin spice essential oil blend or apple pie spice essential oil blend.

Yes, you can make Crock Pot potpourri. You can also make this natural simmering potpourri on the stove or in an Instant Pot.
The fruits and spices are the same for each method. It's personal preference which one you make and use for your fall potpourri recipes.
How Do You Use Potpourri in a Crock Pot?
You will cut the fruits and add dried spices. Then place in a Crock Pot, Instant Pot, or large pan on the stove top.
Then add water and essential oil, if desired, and simmer. You don't need to boil your Crock Pot potpourri; just have it warm enough to gently release the scent.
How Long Does Simmering Potpourri Last?
This Crock Pot potpourri will last about 4 days. I let it simmer for a few hours then turn off the heat so it can cool.
Then place in an airtight container or quart mason jar and place in the fridge. Reheat when you want to use your fall stovetop potpourri and repeat until it loses its scent.

For two 32 ounce jars of natural simmering potpourri, you will need:
- Fresh apples or dried apples
- Fresh oranges or dried orange slices
- Whole cloves
- Ground nutmeg
- Cinnamon sticks
- Water
- Vanilla extract (make your own vanilla extract or make Instant Pot vanilla extract)
Fall Stovetop Potpourri Directions
Slice the apples and oranges into 1/4 inch slices. Place 1 apple sliced, 1 orange sliced, 4 cinnamon sticks, and 1 tablespoon cloves to each 32 ounce mason jar.
Instant Pot Potpourri Directions
For Instant Pot potpourri, add the contents of one jar to the Instant Pot and add 2 cups of water and 2 tablespoons of vanilla extract. Turn it on to saute and bring to a boil. Then set the Instant Pot to warm and enjoy the homemade fall potpourri.
Crock Pot Potpourri Directions
To make Crock Pot potpourri, add the contents of one jar to the slow cooker. Add 2 cups of water and 2 tablespoons of vanilla and turn the slow cooker on high. Leave the lid off and cook. You can reduce the heat to low if needed.
Fall Stovetop Potpourri Directions
To make this homemade fall potpourri on the stove, place the contents of one jar, 2 cups of water, and 2 tablespoons of vanilla extract in a large saucepan. Heat over high heat until boiling. Then reduce the heat and let it simmer.
For all natural simmering potpourri, add more water as needed. Don't let it run dry because that can cause the homemade fall potpourri burn or scorch.
If you are making a simmering potpourri gift, use only dried fruits and spices. Package just the dried items in a jar for gifting. Do not add the water or the vanilla extract.
After you add water, you will have to store this recipe for simmering potpourri in the fridge. You can reuse it up to 4 days.
