How Can I Use Essential Oils at Home Without a Diffuser?
I do have an essential oil diffuser that I use often, but sometimes I want a passive diffuser. This DIY essential oil diffuser is perfect for my office because I don't have to mess with adding water to a diffuser.
It's also great for a bathroom where people are in and out and a diffuser doesn't make sense.

How Do I Make a Diffuser For My Car?
You can also use this DIY essential oil diffuser for a car. I like to use oils in the car to make it smell fresh and for aromatherapy.
Here are some other ways to make a diffuser for your car:
What is the Difference Between Active and Passive Diffusers?
There are two styles of essential oil diffusers: active and passive. Active diffusers use ultrasonic technology to push particles of essential oils into the air. These usually have water in them and include ultrasonic and vaporizer diffusers.
Passive diffusers work by adding a few drops of essential oils to the diffuser. The essential oils evaporate and release the aroma into the air.
Active diffusers tend to be stronger and cover a larger area. They also use electricity or batteries to work.
Passive diffusers don't need any energy, so they are good for diffusing in rooms where you walk in and out or don't want to use electricity.
For example, I don't like the hassle of getting water in my office or risking leaving the diffuser on. I also use a passive diffuser beside my bed at night so I don't have to worry about turning off the diffuser.
How Do You Use a Passive Diffuser?
You simply place 2-5 drops of essential oils on your DIY oil diffuser without reeds to create a light scent. The scent will last for several hours, but it will be a lighter scent than if you use a diffuser.
Are Passive Diffusers Safe for Dogs and Cats?
While passive diffusers are safer to use around kids and pets, always make sure that the oils that you use are safe for dogs, cats, and kids.
How Do You Clean a Passive Diffuser?
Some essential oils can discolor this DIY essential oil diffuser. Vanilla often discolors passive diffusers.
You can use a cotton swab dipped in white vinegar to clean the wood bead on this tassel diffuser.
Tassel Diffuser Supplies
To make this DIY oil diffuser without reeds, you will need:
- Macramé rope - I used 3/16 inch (5mm)
- Ring bead - I used a 30 mm.
- Small round bead - I used a 10 mm.
- Comb
- Scissors
- Tape
- Essential oils
How to Make a Hanging Car Diffuser
I do want to note that I deviated from the directions from Simply Earth. I could not get both ends of the macrame rope inside the bead, so I changed mine slightly. If you can get two strands of rope in the bead, then knot the long piece of rope around the wood circle and then add the wood bead on top of the knot.
Step #1
Cut the macrame rope into one 14 inch section and four 7 inch pieces.
Step #2
Wrap the end of the macrame rope with washi tape or regular tape to create a point at the end. Then thread the wood bead on the longer piece of rope. Place the bead in the middle of the section of rope.
Step #3
Fold the 14 inch section of rope in half with the bead in the center. Place the bend of the rope with the bead through the ring. Pull the ends of the rope around the ring and through the bend of the rope. Pull taut. This creates a cow hitch knot. Tie the ends of the rope in a knot so you can hang the hanging car diffuser.
Step #4
Place the four shorter pieces of rope on the bottom of the ring using a cow hitch knot. Use your fingers or a comb to gently unravel the rope hanging from the ring to create fringe.
You can hang this tassel diffuser where you want to use aromatherapy or use as a DIY essential oil car diffuser. Add 2-5 drops of essential oils. I used 2 drops of Vanilla Woods and 1 drop Bay essential oil for a winter scent.
Now you know how to make a DIY essential oil diffuser for car or tassel diffuser for your home.
