This massage oil recipe essential oils has a relaxing blend of oils.  However, you can use other essential oils, which we will talk about below.

There are several carrier oil options that you can use.  Some soak in quickly, some offer more moisturization for your skin.  We'll also talk about the best carrier oil to use for your massage oil homemade recipe.

How Do I Make My Own Massage Oil?

A few years ago, I posted a warming massage oil recipe that's great for a couples massage.  It's also good for pain since it's warming.  This massage oil recipe is similar, but I wanted to use a blend of relaxing essential oils.

You only need a carrier oil (or a mix of oils) and essential oils to make massage oil recipes using essential oils.  I used fractionated coconut oil, bay essential oil, and bergamot essential oil.

Like I mentioned, this was a recipe in the January 2022 Simply Earth recipe box.  It's sold out now, but you can still order the current month's box.  Don't forget to use code EVERYTHINGPRETTYFREE for a free $40 gift card when you order.

What Ingredients are in Massage Oil?

The main ingredient in a massage oil recipe is the carrier oil.  What are carrier oils?  Carrier oils are planted based oils that are used to carry essential oils and absolutes.  In this case, they are used for essential oils.

You'll also need essential oils.  to make a massage oil homemade recipe.

That's all you need!  There's no preservative or emulsifier since both ingredients are oil based.

Which Oil is Best for Body Massage?

There are more than 40 different carrier oils, and they can all be used to make massage oil recipes using essential oils.  You can learn more about popular carrier oils and their benefits here.

I also have a book Carrier Oils that has information about more than 40 different oils.

If you sign up for my newsletter, you'll get a free printable with several carrier oils and their benefits.

Each carrier oil has its own benefits.  Some oils are dry oils, so they soak into your skin quickly and don't leave you feeling oily.  Other oils are more moisturizing, but they take longer to soak in.

Each oil has a different fat, mineral, and vitamin composition.  If you want to moisturize your skin, then you'll want an oil that's good for your skin type.

Some carrier oils have an odor, yet others are odorless.  That can make a difference for your relaxing massage oil recipe.

I recommend using these carrier oils for a relaxing body massage oil:

  • Sweet almond oil is an inexpensive carrier oil, and it's my favorite for an all purpose carrier oil.  It's a light yellow color and odorless.  It's high in linoleic acid, minerals, proteins, and vitamins to moisturize your skin.  It has a good slip, so it's a good oil to use for massage.  Do not use sweet almond oil if you have nut allergies.
  • Apricot kernel oil is a dry oil, so it soaks into the skin quickly.  It has a silky feeling, so it's good for massages.  It's high in fatty acids and vitamins to moisturize the skin.
  • Grapeseed oil is also a dry oil, so it soaks into the skin.  It's high in linoleic acid, vitamins, and minerals.
  • Jojoba oil is actually a wax and not an oil.  It's the oil that's most like the skin's natural oils.  It penetrates deeper into the skin to moisturize and soften the skin.  It's more expensive, so I recommend mixing it with another oil.
  • Avocado oil is an excellent carrier oil for dry skin due to the fatty acids and vitamins.  It's a heavy oil, so I'd mix it with three or four parts of a dry oil (apricot or grapeseed) to one part avocado oil.
  • Sunflower oil is a dry oil that soaks into your skin quickly.  It's high in Vitamin A for your skin.  Sunflower oil also has natural ceramides, so it's a great oil for dry skin.
  • Coconut oil is a solid at room temperature, but you can still use it for a massage oil recipe with coconut oil.  Coconut oil can be warmed by placing it in a bowl of warm water or simply using body heat to melt it.  It goes on light and won't leave your skin greasy.
  • Fractionated coconut oil is a liquid at room temperature.  It's colorless and odorless, so it makes a great oil for a massage oil recipe.  It's inexpensive, but it's a good oil for dry skin.
  • Olive oil can also be used for a massage oil.  It's a heavier oil, and it will leave your skin feeling greasy and sometimes even sticky.  It does have a slight odor.  However, it's inexpensive and easy to find.

You can also combine carrier oils for the best massage oil recipe.  Some oils, like jojoba oil, are more expensive, so you can mix them with a less expensive oil.  I also like to mix avocado oil because it's heavy.

Plant Therapy has a Marvelous Massage blend with sweet almond oil, fractionated coconut oil, jojoba oil, meadowfoam oil, and sunflower oil.

Mountain Rose Herb has a massage oil base with organic sunflower oil, organic jojoba oil, organic apricot oil, and organic argan oil.

Turmeric is great for a massage, so you can use these oils to make turmeric infused oil to use.

What Essential Oils are Good for Body Massage?

You can make massage oil recipes using essential oils for the aromatherapy benefits of the oil as well as skin benefits.

I used bay essential oil and bergamot essential oil to make my relaxing body massage oil.  However, there are other oils that you can use.

You will need to properly dilute essential oils.  Learn more about how to mix essential oils and carrier oils

I used a 0.5 percent dilution to make my massage oil homemade recipe.  Since the oil is used on a large part of the body, I went with a lower concentration.

However, you can use a 1 to 2 percent dilution for occasional use or for targeted use.

Avoid getting essential oils in sensitive areas.  If you using this massage oil recipe with coconut oil as a couples massage, be mindful of having oils on your hands.

Here are some good essential oils to use in a massage oil recipe using essential oils:

  • Lavender essential oil is relaxing and soothing.  It can help reduce anxiety and promote calming.  It's also good for the skin.
  • Peppermint essential oil is invigorating.  It's good for headaches and muscle pain.  I recommend using no more than 1 drop of peppermint in this particular recipe since it's a stronger oil.
  • Chamomile essential oil is also relaxing and calming.  It's a good oil to use before bedtime for a relaxing massage oil recipe.
  • Geranium essential oil is both rejuvenating and relaxing.  It's said to boost circulation and stimulate the nervous system.
  • Bergamot essential oil is good for the skin and to reduce stress.  It's said to boost your mood and relieve anxiety.  It's both calming and uplifting.

You can also use an essential oil blend for your relaxing body massage oil.  I suggest one of the following:
