Honey Almond Body Scrub Recipe
We had what's known as false spring last weekend. That's when Ohio weather changes from freezing to in the 60s and then right back to freezing.
It wasn't quite shorts weather, but it's coming. It's time to give my skin a little extra love before summer starts.
This honey and almond scrub is easy to make at home. It naturally exfoliates with sugar (and you can add ground almonds too!) and moisturizes your skin with raw honey.

Can You Make Sugar Scrub With Sugar and Honey?
Generally, you make a sugar scrub with sugar and oil. However, you can also add honey to make a honey almond body scrub.
You can replace all of the oil with honey, but that's a lot of honey. Instead, I used both oil and honey to get the honey scrub benefits and the benefits of the oil.
Is Honey a Good Exfoliator?
Honey is an excellent natural DIY beauty ingredient. You can learn more about honey benefits for skin here.
Honey can reduce inflammation and promote healing for your skin. Honey is also a natural exfoliant, so that's why I made a honey sugar scrub.
Honey contains small amounts of alpha-hydroxy acids, including gluconic acid, that break the bonds that hold dead skin cells on the outer layer of your skin.
When you remove these cells using a honey almond body scrub your skin looks brighter and feels smoother.
Can I Use Honey and Sugar Scrub Every Day?
I recommend using this honey body scrub recipe once or twice a week. If you haven't used a sugar scrub in a while, then use it twice a week for a few weeks.
If your skin is soft using it once a week, continue using it once a week. If you need to use it twice a week, that shouldn't irritate your skin too much.
What Happens if We Scrub Daily?
There are many honey sugar scrub benefits for your skin, but too much of a good thing can harm your skin. Using a honey body scrub recipe daily can lead to irritation and sensitive skin.
Although using a honey almond body scrub daily shouldn't cause permanent damage to your skin, it can be uncomfortable.
How Long Do You Leave a Honey Sugar Scrub for Body On?
When you use this honey and almond body scrub, scrub your skin for about 30 seconds in each section. Then rinse when you are done with that body part.
Both the sugar and honey work by using mild acids to exfoliate your skin in addition to the mechanical scrubbing from the sugar. Leaving a honey and almond scrub on too long can cause irritation for some people.
What Should We Apply After Scrubbing With Honey Sugar Scrub for Body?
The oil in this honey scrub recipe will linger on your skin, but I still like to follow with a moisturizer. I like to use my more intensive moisturizers or even a body butter recipe after exfoliating.
I really like Derma E Vitamin E Therapeutic Shea Butter Lotion for a natural lotion that's very moisturizing and great for sensitive skin.
How Long Does Honey Sugar Scrub Last?
This honey and almond scrub will last for three to six months on the shelf. It doesn't have a preservative in it, so be careful not to introduce water into it.
You can add some Geoguard ECT or phenonip as a preservative. A preservative protects against microbes that can be introduced by wet or dirty hands.
To prevent contamination, I recommend using a scoop or a spoon to get the honey almond scrub out of the container.
Do You Refrigerate a Honey Sugar Scrub?
This honey sugar scrub for body doesn't need to be refrigerated because it doesn't have water in it. It is shelf stable for three to six months.
However, if you get water in it from scooping it with wet hands, then you will need to store it in the fridge.
Honey and Almond Scrub Tips and Variations
Here are some tips and variations that you can try:
- Substitute 1/4 to 1/2 of the white sugar with ground almonds. I didn't do this because I have sensitive skin, but ground almonds make a wonderful natural exfoliant. You can buy ground almonds or grind whole almonds in a food processor or coffee grinder.
- You can substitute half or all of the sugar for brown sugar for a gentle sugar scrub. You can also use salt. Learn more about the benefits of salt scrub vs sugar scrub here.
- You do not have to add the mica. It's purely for color and has no other benefits.
- You can add up to 30 drops of essential oils if you want. Good ones to try are Lavender, Helichrysum, or Frankincense. For blends, I like Beauty Within, Bumps and Boo Boos, or Skin Care Blend.
- Do not use this honey almond scrub on your face. It's too abrasive for sensitive facial skin.
- To make a honey and almond scrub for your feet, use salt in place of the sugar and consider using the ground almonds.
- I used sweet almond oil because it's a great all purpose carrier oil. To make this honey body scrub recipe more moisturizing, use avocado oil or hemp seed oil. For a lighter scrub that isn't as greasy, use fractionated coconut oil, grapeseed oil, or apricot kernel oil. Learn more about carrier oils and their benefits to help you choose the best one.
- If you are selling this honey and almond body scrub, I highly recommend adding a preservative because customers may use wet hands to scoop it.
- I recommend using raw honey because it has more benefits for your skin.
