What is Kaolin Clay?
Kaolin clay is a natural clay that's sometimes called China clay or white clay. It's the most gentle natural clay, so it's often used for the benefits of kaolin clay for skin.
Kaolin clay is usually white in color, but it can also have a reddish hue or greenish hue, depending on the minerals found where it is mined.
Kaolin clay is abundant in the United States, China, and Brazil among other areas in the world.
However, it is called China clay because this mineral was mined in China for centuries to make porcelain among other products.
What is Special About Kaolin Clay?
Kaolin clay is a popular natural clay for skin because it's more gentle than other clays. Other clays absorb excess oils and impurities from the skin, but white clay doesn't absorb as much.
Bentonite clay absorbs 3 to 7 times its weight, green clay absorbs 1.5 to 2 times its weight, but white clay absorbs about 65 percent of its weight.
This means that it's better suited for dry, combination, normal, and sensitive skin.
Even though this type of clay is gentler, it still has many kaolin clay for skin benefits.
Why is Clay Good for Skin?
Although types of clays differ in compositions and benefits, natural clays are good for your skin. Clays absorb excess oil and impurities from your skin. White clay doesn't absorb as much as bentonite or green clay, but it has other kaolin clay skin benefits.
Clays are rich with minerals that promote skin health. They also exfoliate when you use clay in a mask, soap, or for cleansing.
When used in your skin care routine, kaolin clay for skin can make your skin look brighter and feel smoother.
What Can Kaolin Be Used For?
Generally, you can use kaolin clay in place of other clays in DIY beauty recipes. I like to use it in face masks, cleansing products, and face masks.
If you have a recipe that calls for another type of clay, you can use white clay in place of other kinds of clays. You can use white clay in this easy DIY Greek yogurt face mask recipe.
Can We Use Kaolin Clay Daily?
Generally, you can use kaolin clay for skin every day. However, I wouldn't use a kaolin clay face mask more than one or two times a week.
You can use kaolin clay soap or a facial cleanser daily.
Kaolin Clay Benefits for Skin
Kaolin clay uses for skin are numerous. There are several benefits to using kaolin clay recipes, especially in DIY beauty recipes.
Kaolin clay isn't drying and generally doesn't irritate most people's skin. It's well tolerated by people with dry or sensitive skin.
However, I recommend doing a patch test on your neck or inner arm before using it on your face.
Kaolin Clay Skin Benefits for Oily or Acne Prone Skin
White clay doesn't absorb as much as green clay, but it does absorb some excess oil. It can also draw out some impurities from the skin without causing irritation. This can help reduce acne and blemishes.
Kaolin clay skin benefits also include being naturally antibacterial. This can help reduce the bacteria that can cause acne, so using white clay can promote clearer skin with continued use.
Anti Aging Benefits of Kaolin Clay for Skin
Although there aren't a lot of studies about white clay, there is one promising study from 2012. This study tested how well kaolin clay for skin was for increasing collagen in rats.
In the study, white clay did show that in can increase collagen fibers. However, this may not be the case for human skin.
