Learn how to make a water candle. A water and oil candle is a beautiful and unique candle, and they are great for beginners because you don't need to use wax. I headed to Dollar Tree for supplies for my floating wick candles, but you can easily make yours to match your decor.
How to Make a Water Candle
Water candle making is a very easy to way to make a homemade candle. You'll just need a container, water, oil, and a a special water candle wick to make yours.
I added some decorations to mine because I'm extra and I wanted a pretty one. You can easily match your decor or make floating wick candles for a wedding reception or other party.
This is one of the recipes from my July 2022 Simply Earth Essential Oil Recipe Box. I love it so much, I wanted to share it with you so you can make your own.

How Do Water Candles Work?
Water wick candles are very easy to make because you don't need to melt wax and then worry about additives like scent and color clogging the wick. Nor do you have to worry about wick size.
Floating wick candles have a candle wick that is placed through a small disc. The disc floats in the water, so the top of the wick stays dry.
Then you fill the container with water and add a layer of oil on top. The oil floats on top, and the wick uses that for fuel to burn.
You can get a 3 pack of wicks from Simply Earth to make a few. You can also get a box of 50 flower shaped floating wicks or a pack of 100 round floating wicks that are cheaper per wick from Amazon.
Can You Make a Water Candle?
Yes, you can make DIY water candles. In fact, water candle making is very easy because you don't have to melt wax or pour hot wax.
Is Water Candle Safe?
Floating wick candles are easier to make, and you don't have to worry about using the right wax or wick. You also don't have to worry about your colorant or scent clogging the wick or the container bursting from the heat.
However, a water and oil candle is still a candle with a flame. Use the same precautions that you would for any candle and keep out of reach of children and pets.
Don't place a floating water candle near anything flammable and use common sense when selecting objects to decorate inside the water.
Only use objects that won't float in the water or glue them to the bottom with hot glue. Don't light water wick candles if the decorations are floating.
What is a Floating Wick?
Floating wick candles have a cotton string for a wick. There's a small disc that holds the wick, and it's usually made of cork or something that floats.
How Do You Set Up a Floating Wick?
You simply insert the cotton wick into the disc with 1/3 of the wick above the disc. Then carefully set the disc on top of the oil in your water and oil candle.
Use a long handled lighter to light the wick. It can take up to 10 seconds to light.
What Liquid Do you Use for Floating Candles?
For these water wick candles, I suggest using distilled water or filtered water just so it lasts a little bit longer. Tap water will start to get icky after a few days.
I used vegetable cooking oil for the oil. You can also use olive oil. There's no need to use a more expensive oil because there are no skin or health benefits.
How Long Does a Floating Wick Last?
Floating wick candles will burn about 7 hours. This varies depending on the length of the cotton wick and how much oil is on top of the water and oil candle.
You can always use a new wick and relight after you add more oil.
Essential Oils for Water Wick Candles
You can burn essential oils by adding them to the oil when you make your DIY candle with oil. I used a blend of lemongrass, sage, and cinnamon for a calming scent.
I've also made an easy DIY citronella candle using floating wicks.
You can use your favorite essential oils, however use 6 drops per 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil.
I like to use Peace and Quiet and Tranquility for calming blends or Focus when I'm working.
Water and Oil Candle Supplies
You will need the following to learn how to make a candle with water and oil:
- Floating wick (available as a 3 pack from Simply Earth or a 100 pack on Amazon)
- 2 ounces vegetable oil
- 3 drops lemongrass essential oil
- 2 drops sage essential oil
- 1 drops cinnamon leaf essential oil
- Heat proof glass vase or jar
- Decorative items (optional)
How to Make a Water Candle
Step #1
Assemble the floating wick by placing the cotton wick through the hold in the cork circle. You want about 1/3 of the wick on the top of the cork. Set aside.
Step #2
Place decorative items in the jar. Make sure they will not float to the top. Use hot glue if needed.
Step #3
Fill with water.
Step #4
Add two ounces of cooking oil on top of the water, You want to have about 1/4 inch of oil on top of the water. Then add the essential oils and stir gently. The oil and water will quickly separate.
To use your floating wick candles, place the wick foil side up. Use a long lighter to light the wick. This may take up to 10 seconds to light. Enjoy the aromatherapy water and oil candle. Blow out the candle when you are done.
When you're done, you can relight it or add a new wick the next day. The water will need changed after a day or two.
Always burn water wick candles within sight and away from children or pets. Don't burn near curtains or where fabric or other flammable items can tough the flame. Never burn unattended.
