Summer Potpourri Recipe

Looking for simmering potpourri recipes?  Try this homemade citrus potpourri for summer or any time.  You can make it as an Instant Pot simmering potpourri recipe, a slow cooker simmering potpourri, or a stovetop potpourri summer recipe.

Homemade Potpourri Summer Recipe

Since I work from home and the kids are home all summer, I like to make a summer potpourri recipe to keep the house smelling good.

I want to use natural scents, but I don't always want the diffuser running because the cats are usually in the main living area.

That's when I make an Instant Pot simmering potpourri recipe.  But you can also use your slow cooker or make a summertime stove top potpourri with the same recipe.

What Can I Boil on the Stove to Make My House Smell Good?

You can use most foods like fruits or herbs or spices for simmering potpourri recipes.  I used fresh limes, fresh thyme, mint leaves, and natural mint extract.

You can use either fresh herbs or dried herbs.  I grow several of my own herbs (learn how to do container gardening with herbs), but I also buy dried herbs for the ones that I don't grow.

If you buy dried herbs, then I recommend buying a high quality herb.  I like The Plant Guru, Grass Roots Herb Supply, and Mountain Maus Remedies.

How Do  You Use a Potpourri Simmer?

I like using simmering potpourri recipes because they are so easy to use.  Simply add the fruit, herbs, and spices to water and simmer for several hours.

You can make Instant Pot potpourri, a stovetop potpourri summer recipe, or use a slow cooker.

Can You Simmer All Potpourri?

Some people find it easier to use a dried potpourri rather than use fresh ingredients.  I only go to the store every other week, so I get it.

You can buy dried ingredients to make Instant Pot potpourri.  However, I recommend buying dried ingredients that are made for simmering or a dried potpourri that's made for simmering.

Regular potpourri can have fragrance oils and or other ingredients that won't heat well in the water.  If the ingredients are treated, you won't want to create a steam that will be inhaled by your family.

Can You Simmer Dried Potpourri?

Yes, you can simmer dried ingredients instead of using fresh.  I would look for dried limes, dried thyme, and dried mint leaves.

You can then store the dried ingredients in a jar and use as needed to make a homemade potpourri summer recipe.

How Long Can You Simmer Potpourri?

This summertime stove top potpourri will last about four days.  You can simmer it for a few hours at a time and then turn it off to cool.

Then store the liquid in mason jars to use again later.  Store the liquid summer potpourri recipe in the fridge to prevent microbes from growing.

How Long Does Stovetop Potpourri Last?

The scent of this homemade citrus potpourri will last for several hours.  When it loses its scent, you can either add more ingredients to keep simmering or compost it and start over.

Can You Reuse Stovetop Potpourri?

Yes, you can reuse summer simmering potpourri recipes for up to four days.  Always store the liquid in the fridge to prevent bacterial or mold growth.

Can You Use Essential Oils in Simmering Potpourri Recipes?

Yes, you can add 1 to 2 drops of essential oils for your summer potpourri recipe.

I recommend one of the following:

You do not need to dilute essential oils with a carrier oil since they aren't coming in contact with your skin.

Be sure to only use oils that are safe to use around children or pets if they are in the home.

Summer Potpourri Variations

I like the fresh and clean scent of the limes, thyme, and mint.  However, you can replace some of the ingredients with one of the following:

  • Orange slices
  • Lemon slices
  • Grapefruit slices
  • Sliced ginger root
  • Basil

Homemade Citrus Potpourri Ingredients

To make a summer potpourri, you will need:

How Do You Make Simmering Potpourri Liquid?

Step #1

Slice the limes into thin slices.

Step #2

Add all of the ingredients to your Instant Pot, slow cooker, or a large heavy pan for stovetop potpourri summer.

Step #3

For the Instant Pot, choose the keep warm function and let the lime potpourri simmer until the liquid has evaporated.  Then turn off and let cool.

For the slow cooker, heat on low or keep warm until the water evaporates or you are ready to turn it off.  Leave the lid off so the scent of the homemade citrus potpourri can fill your home.

For the stovetop, heat over low heat and let simmer but do not let it boil.

For all three methods, you can add more water as needed.  I recommend keeping the heat low for a simmer but try not to let it boil.

My slow cooker gets really hot, so I turn it on and then turn it off when it starts to boil.

Now you know how to make a summer potpourri recipe!  I hope you enjoy!
