Can I Put Coffee in Melt and Pour Soap?
Yes, you can make a coffee melt and pour soap recipe. However, you can not add brewed coffee to melt and pour soap.
Instead, you can make coffee grounds soap. Coffee grounds are safe to add to melt and pour soap and won't grow mold or other germs.
Learn more about melt and pour soap additives to see what you can safely add to melt and pour soap.
Can You Use Unused Coffee Grounds in Soap?
You can use unused coffee grounds or spent coffee grounds to make a coffee melt and pour soap recipe. However, I recommend using spent coffee grounds.
Unused coffee grounds can bleed into the soap. Spent coffee grounds don't tend to bleed as much.
After brewing your coffee, lay the grounds on a dish or pan and let dry completely before using.
How Do You Add Coffee Grounds to Melt and Pour Soap?
Coffee grounds are heavy, so they tend to sink in the soap. To combat this, use a suspension melt and pour soap base.
You can also melt the soap and add your additives except for the coffee grounds. Then let the soap cool until it starts to thicken.
Add the coffee grounds, stir, and pour. But be quick, because it will set up quick.
How Much Coffee Grounds to Add to Soap?
Melt and pour soap will only hold so much, so you can't just add as much as you want. Generally, you can add 1 tablespoon of coffee grounds per pound of soap.
What Essential Oil Goes With Coffee Soap?
If you just want a coffee scent, then you can use coffee essential oil. It smells just like a freshly brewed cup of coffee.
I like to add copaiba essential oil. Copaiba smells rich and sweet, almost like honey. It complements the coffee scent and smells like a latte.
You can also use one of the following essential oils:
You can also leave it coffee scented and not add any additional scent. For a natural scent, try natural fragrance oils from Nature's Oils. They have several coffee drink inspired scents.
Coffee Scrub Soap DIY Tips and Tricks
This is a fairly easy melt and pour soap recipe, but here are some tips to help you:
- Melt the soap in a double boiler or in the microwave in short 10 to 30 second bursts. Be careful not to overheat or let it boil because your soap can get rubbery.
- Use a quality base. I recommend Stephenson's or Crafty Bubbles.
- A white base will turn tan with the coffee. Clear soap will have a darker color
- Let the soap cool slightly until it starts to thicken before pouring. This will help keep the soap suspended in the soap.
- You can add up to 50 drops of essential oils per pound of soap.
- I used a loaf mold. Instead of cutting bars in a loaf, I made one long thin bar and cut that into smaller bars. You can also use this rectangle mold to make bars.
- You can use unused coffee grounds or spent coffee grounds. Spent coffee grounds will not bleed as much.
Coffee Ground Soap Ingredients
You will need the following to make a coffee soap recipe:

How Do You Make Melt and Pour Coffee Soap?
Step #1
Cut the soap base into 1 inch cubes. Reserve two cubes and set aside. Melt the remainder of the soap in the microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring between intervals.
Step #2
Allow the melted soap to cool for about three minutes. Stir it often so it doesn't set up on the sides. Add the essential oils and coffee grounds. Keep stirring until the soap has cooled but hasn't set up.
Step #3
Pour the coffee grounds soap into the mold. Let it sit for one minute and then sprinkle coffee beans on top.
Step #4
Heat the 2 squares of soap you had reserved. This will only take about 15 to 20 seconds, so keep an eye on it. Pour it evenly over the coffee beans and add more beans as needed. This helps hold the beans in place.
