Easy Gingerbread Soap Recipe

This gingerbread soap recipe without lye is made with melt and pour soap base, so it's a great recipe for beginners.  It's naturally scented with an essential oil blend and colored with mica.  This is a fun soap that's perfect for gift giving or keep for yourself for a fun winter soap.

DIY Gingerbread Soap Recipe

Melt and pour soap allows you to get creative with colors and additives.  Adding embeds allows you to make a professional looking soap in an afternoon without needing lye or a lot of special equipment.

With its rich, spicy scent and festive appearance, gingerbread soap is a delightful addition to any bathroom or a thoughtful homemade gift.

By using the melt and pour method, even beginners can craft luxurious, professional-quality soap without the complexities of traditional soap-making. Let’s dive into the process of creating this aromatic treat!

Choosing the Right Melt and Pour Soap Base

Selecting the right soap base is crucial for achieving the desired texture and benefits. Popular options include glycerin, shea butter, and goat milk bases.

You'll need both a clear and a white melt and pour soap base.  You can also use clear for the embeds since the mica will color it.  You'll get a darker gingerbread embed by using a clear base.

I like to use Crafty Bubbles soap base.  Simply Earth has a clear melt and pour soap base that is very clear, so I like to use it for embedded soaps.

Stephenson's melt and pour is also a good brand.

Understanding the Role of Fragrance and Essential Oils

For gingerbread soap, look for oils with notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and vanilla.  You can make a gingerbread soap recipe with essential oils or with fragrance oils.

If you prefer a more natural approach, consider blending essential oils such as cinnamon bark, sweet orange, and a touch of clove.

You can also find a gingerbread essential oil blend from Simply Earth or a natural fragrance oil blend from Crafty Bubbles.

Create your own essential blend with my essential oil blend worksheet.  This gives you the blending factors of each oil and worksheets to create your own blend.

Always measure fragrance oils carefully to avoid overpowering the soap or irritating the skin.

Gathering Your Ingredients and Supplies

Here's what you'll need for this gingerbread soap recipe for beginners.  The exact amounts are listed below in the how to card.

This easy gingerbread soap recipe makes 4 bars of soap.

White melt and pour soap base.  This is for the embeds.  White melt and pour soap will yield a muted soap when using mica to color it.  For a darker soap, replace this with clear melt and pour soap.

Clear melt and pour soap base.  This is for the clear soap bar.  It's important to use clear melt and pour so you can see the embeds.

Brown mica powder.  I prefer to use mica to color my soaps, but you can use a liquid soap colorant.

Essential oil or fragrance oil.  I used a gingerbread essential oil blend.  You can also use a gingerbread fragrance oil or other scent.  Sugar cookie would be a great scent.

Gingerbread soap mold.  This is for the embeds.  I also used this mold to make these gingerbread soaps.

Rectangle soap mold.  This is the rectangle soap mold that I use.  It's easy to unmold the soaps.

Spouted container.  You can use a Pyrex measuring cup or a spouted soap measuring cup as long as it is microwave safe.

Wooden stick or spoon.  You can use a wooden stick or a spoon to stir the soap.  If you make a lot of soap, consider investing in disposable wooden stir sticks to reduce the amount of soap that goes down your drain.

Digital scale.  You'll need a digital scale to measure the soap base.

Spray bottle with rubbing alcohol.  Use a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol to get rid of air bubbles and create a smooth bar of soap.  You'll also use it to spray the embeds before pouring the clear soap.

Directions

Step #1

Cut the white soap base into 1 inch cubes and place in a bowl.  Cut the clear soap base into 1 inch cubes and place in a separate bowl.

Step #2

Heat the white soap base in the microwave in 15 second intervals, stirring between each interval, until melted. Be careful not to overheat.

Step #3

Add the brown mica powder and stir well until the color is uniform.  Pour into all 8 of the gingerbread mold cavities.  Allow to harden for 2 hours.  Unmold and set aside.

Step #4

Add the clear soap to a microwave safe container and heat on 30 second intervals, stirring at each interval, until melted.

Step #5

Add a tiny pinch of brown mica powder and the essential oils.  Stir well.

Step #6

Pour a small amount of the clear soap into 4 of the rectangle soap mold cavities.  Pour just enough to cover the bottom of the mold.  Spray with rubbing alcohol.  Allow to set up.

Step #7

Place two of the gingerbread men into each of the rectangle soap mold cavities.  Spray the embeds and the first layer of soap with rubbing alcohol.

Step #8

Reheat the soap base if needed.  Pour the rest of the soap over the embeds to fill the soap molds.  Spray with rubbing alcohol.

Step #9

Let cool completely and unmold.
